How I Calmed My Breakouts Before My Wedding (Without Giving Up My Facials)

A few years ago, I struggled to stop my skin from breaking out. I tried everything — internally and topically — and then, thankfully, something finally worked. Adding a targeted set of alcohol-free tinctures and supplements to my routine made a real difference in calming inflammation and improving my skin's overall appearance, and they absolutely contributed to my wedding day glow.

I'm not against the usual bridal treatments — facials, Botox, and the like have their place — but supporting your skin from the inside is often the missing puzzle piece, and it shouldn't be skipped. I started noticing subtle changes after about three weeks of consistent use, and the biggest improvements showed up around the three-month mark.

I’ve also listed my must have topical products for soothing and prepping wedding day skin for the ultimate “blushing ever after” moment.

A quick note before we dive in: I'm not a doctor, and this isn't medical advice — just what worked for me. Please talk to your physician or dermatologist before starting any new supplement, especially if you're pregnant, nursing, trying to conceive, managing a hormonal condition like PCOS, or taking prescription medication. Supplements aren't reviewed by the FDA for safety or effectiveness the way drugs are, and they aren't intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.

The Alcohol-Free Tinctures

These four herbal tinctures became a daily habit — a few drops in water, morning and night.

Dandelion Root Extract

Dandelion has long been used in folk herbalism as a gentle digestive bitter and mild diuretic. The theory (still more traditional than clinically proven for acne specifically) is that supporting digestion and elimination reduces the internal "backlog" that can show up on skin as dullness or breakouts. Dandelion also contains polyphenols and flavonoids with antioxidant activity, which may help neutralize free radicals that contribute to inflammation. Additional benefit: some people find it helps with mild bloating.

Milk Thistle Extract

Milk thistle's active compound, silymarin, is one of the more researched botanicals for liver support, with several studies pointing to antioxidant and hepatoprotective effects. Because the liver plays a role in filtering hormones and toxins, some practitioners connect liver support to clearer skin — though direct clinical trials linking milk thistle to acne reduction are still limited. Additional benefit: general antioxidant support for the body.

Calendula Tincture

Calendula (marigold) is well-documented for its anti-inflammatory and wound-healing properties, particularly in topical form, where it's been shown to support skin repair and calm irritation. Taken internally, its flavonoids and triterpenoids are thought to offer similar anti-inflammatory support system-wide. Additional benefit: traditionally used to soothe minor skin irritation and support healing.

Burdock Root Tincture

Burdock root is a staple in traditional "blood purifying" herbal blends and contains antioxidant compounds like quercetin and luteolin. Some small studies suggest anti-inflammatory activity, though robust clinical research specifically on burdock and acne is still sparse — most of the evidence here is traditional use rather than large-scale trials. Additional benefit: contains inulin, a prebiotic fiber that may support gut health.

Spearmint — My Hormonal Acne Secret Weapon

This one actually has some real clinical backing. A small but notable study found that drinking spearmint tea twice daily reduced free and total testosterone levels in women, which is meaningful because excess androgen activity is a well-established driver of hormonal, jawline-and-chin-pattern acne (think: increased oil production and clogged pores). That's why I reach for it as tea or in capsule form, especially around my cycle.

Note: because spearmint may lower androgen levels, it's worth a conversation with your doctor first if you're on hormonal medication, trying to conceive, or managing a condition like PCOS.

Collagen + Vitamin C

Vitamin C isn't just an antioxidant — it's a required cofactor for collagen synthesis, meaning your body literally can't build new collagen without it. Pairing a collagen supplement with vitamin C supports that process. Clinical research on oral collagen peptides has shown measurable improvements in skin elasticity, hydration, and the appearance of fine lines after consistent use over several weeks to months. This isn't targeted acne treatment, but it's a big part of why skin can look plumper and more "lit from within" for photos. Additional benefit: collagen also supports hair, nail, and joint health.

The Topical Trio

TIRTIR Rice Milk Toner

Rice-based toners are typically rich in humectants and gentle antioxidants that help hydrate and prep skin without stripping its natural barrier. A well-hydrated skin barrier is more resilient against the irritation and inflammation that can trigger or worsen breakouts. Additional benefit: helps skin look brighter and more even-toned.

TIRTIR Eye Treatment / Tightening Moisturizer

Formulated with hydrating and firming ingredients, this type of product targets the thinner, more delicate skin around the eyes — an area especially prone to puffiness and fine lines from dehydration or fatigue (hello, wedding-planning stress). Additional benefit: helps reduce the look of tired eyes for photos and video.

Shiseido SPF Moisturizer or Stick

This is the step people skip and shouldn't. UV exposure is one of the biggest drivers of post-acne hyperpigmentation — those dark marks that linger after a breakout heals — because sun exposure stimulates excess melanin production in already-inflamed skin. Daily broad-spectrum SPF helps prevent those marks from deepening and protects against premature aging overall. I’ve so many SPF moisturizers and Shiseido is the only brand that lives up to its claims!

Lanolips Lanolin Ointment

Lanolin is a highly occlusive emollient, meaning it forms a protective layer on skin that helps prevent water loss while allowing skin to breathe. It's been used for decades on dry, cracked, or compromised skin because of how effectively it locks in moisture. Additional benefit: great for chapped lips, cuticles, or any extra-dry patches — handy for brides doing final touch-ups on the big day.
